DA Increment May 2024 by 54%

The 7th Pay Commission, initiated in 2016 by the central government, has consistently raised the payments for government employees. Mandating biannual hikes, employees receive increased Dearness Allowance (DA) in January and July each year.

In April 2024, the January DA was raised by 50%. Now, attention turns to the upcoming July increment. However, the Commission does not guarantee an increase exceeding 50% DA.

The government has steadily increased DA by 4% annually, pegged to the All-India CPI index. The next July DA will depend on the July CPI index, anticipated for release in August, with notification likely in September. However, the Commission caps DA increments at 50%.

July 2024 DA Increment

Unlike the 6th Pay Commission, which had no cap on DA increments, the 7th Pay Commission limits it to 50%. Once DA hits this threshold, it resets to zero. However, salaries do not decrease; instead, the new basic pay includes the previous basic pay and 50% DA.

For instance, if an employee's basic salary is ₹18,000, with a DA of ₹9,000, the new basic pay would be ₹27,000. Official notifications are pending, likely to coincide with the outcome of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
